What is Ethrex?

Ethrex is the new Ethereum execution client built by our partners at LambdaClass, designed from the ground up to support Ethereum for the long run.Ethrex operates in two modes:

• L1 Mode: A minimalist, high-performance Ethereum execution client.
• L2 Mode: A ZK-rollup client supporting RISC-V zkVM and TEE proving—with proofs settled on Ethereum at low cost through integration with Aligned’s ZK Verification Layer.

Ethrex will support based sequencing, meaning rollups using it will be able to use Ethereum’s L1 validators for transaction ordering, giving synchronous access to Ethereum’s liquidity and avoiding the interoperability problems that hinder L2’s today.

Simplicity by Design: Minimalism, Modularity, and Maintainability

Ethrex is written in Rust and has a minimal and performant codebase. It avoids legacy bloat and favors clean, maintainable design.

• Minimal dependencies and modular design keeps the code lightweight and easy to extend.
• Avoids unnecessary abstractions and generics. Code is repeated when it improves clarity. Readability and reliability take priority.
• Concurrency is only used when absolutely needed—reducing complexity and risk in production systems.
